Facebook Tips can be used by Police to Stop

A Dickenson County Circuit Court recently found that a tip coming from a particular Facebook account could be used by the police as an anonymous tip for the purposes of making a legitimate search and seizure. Although the account name could not be verified, the specific and detailed information used by the Facebook account gave the police information that was not readily available by a casual observer and was used to predict verifiable movements by the suspects in question. The tested and proven reliability of the Facebook tip, although the account holder was not verified, was sufficient to justify the stop of the target vehicle. Commonwealth v. Saunders, February 3, 2014; Dickenson County Circuit Court.
