A misdemeanor offense can range from a traffic violation such as Reckless Driving to an Assault and Battery. Misdemeanors can also include drug and larceny offenses as well. The punishment for a misdemeanor can also have a wide range.
Under Code of Virginia § 18.2-11.
- Class 4 Misdemeanors are punishable by a fine of not more than $250;
- Class 3 Misdemeanors are punishable by a fine of not more than $500;
- Class 2 Misdemeanors are punishable by confinement in jail for not more than 6 months, and a fine of not more than $1,000, either or both;
- Class 1 Misdemeanors are punishable by confinement in jail for not more than 12 months, and a fine of not more than $2,500, either or both.
